Hiking to Agiarsali – The Path to the Cave Monastery
Activity Description
We hike on Mount Parnassus, reaching one of the most important Byzantine monuments of Amfikleia: the former ascetic monastery of Agia Rsali.
Its founders are believed to have been monks of Latin origin from the Benedictine, Hospitaller, and Templar orders, coming from the Holy Land, who left the area after its occupation by the Saracens between 718 and 817 AD.
The construction of the complex was clearly completed before the Crusader period of 1204, in a single building phase. In its final form, the complex included—beyond the absolutely necessary church—an ossuary, a water-collection cistern, a stable, a cellar for storing food and wine, as well as five living quarters for the monks, known as cells. These spaces were developed on five levels of uneven elevation.
The route starts from the center of Amfikleia, heading southeast towards “Alonaki.” The return follows exactly the same path.
