Two-day ascent to the Petrostrouga mountain refuge from Thessaloniki
Activity Description
Experience the winter magic of Mount Olympus — an adventure that deserves a place on every must-do list.
Experience winter on Mount Olympus, the mythical mountain of the gods, in a two-day adventure that combines exploration, learning, and breathtaking scenery. In January, the mountain is covered in snow, and the trail from Gortsia to the Petrostrouga refuge leads us through fir forests, Bosnian pines, and alpine landscapes that feel like they came out of a fairytale. From the refuge, the view toward the Aegean is stunning — and on a clear day, you can see all the way to Halkidiki and Mount Athos.
On the second day, we climb higher, using the necessary winter equipment depending on the conditions, to enjoy the peaks up close and move through alpine, snow-covered terrain. During the two days, we also learn basic techniques and important safety principles for winter mountain travel.
Come and discover Mount Olympus in winter — an experience you will never forget!
Day 1: Departure from Thessaloniki and start of the hike
We depart from Thessaloniki at 9:00 a.m., and around 11:00 a.m. we begin our hike from Gortsia, following a beautiful trail that gradually leads us into the snowy landscape of Mount Olympus. At 2:00 p.m. we arrive at the Petrostrouga refuge, where we have time to settle in, explore the surrounding area, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the refuge.
Day 2: Hiking / Ascent & Return
After breakfast at 7:30 a.m., we begin our ascent at 8:00 a.m. toward the highest reachable point of Mount Olympus, depending on weather conditions. We will have the opportunity to move through alpine, snow-covered terrain and enjoy unique winter landscapes.
Our return to Gortsia is expected between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., where we board the vehicle back to Thessaloniki. The trip concludes at approximately 7:00 p.m., leaving us with beautiful memories and powerful images of the winter Olympus.
